Naughty Dog giveth, and Naughty Dog taketh away. The recently announced The Last of Us Part II release date is already null, with a Spring release now set.

The news of the game’s delay comes exactly a month after the original The Last of Us Part II announcement. As opposed to the February 20, 2020 release date, second Last of Us game will hit on May 29, 2020.

Via a PlayStation Blog post, director Neil Druckmann speaks of “disappointing fans” with the game’s delay.

“I know,” writes Druckmann. “It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date.”

Druckmann then goes on to recall the “invigorating” experience of seeing his development team’s hard work being received so well.

“However,” Druckmann continues, “it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality.”

Druckmann wants to ensure that players are able to experience the most polished version of The Last of Us Part II, ultimately leading to the game’s delay. “At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team,” writes Druckmann.

The game’s director concludes that his team is “relieved” that they don’t have to push out a title that isn’t complete, and asks fans to have the understanding that this The Last of Us Part II release date delay was done for the right reasons.
