Fans of The Last of Us game are probably very excited for the movie, but Neil Druckmann is planning big changes.

The Last of Us is generally considered one of the best games of our time, both because of its beautiful graphics and its compelling story.

Playing as the hardened criminal Joel, your task is to escort the teenage girl Ellie across the country, following the outbreak of a zombie virus which has turned the world into a wasteland.

The story perfectly lends itself to the movie format, and it was therefore not surprising when it was announced that plans for a movie version were indeed in the works.

Even better, game director Neil Druckmann is also working on the screenplay for the film. But while he promises that the movie will be, “pretty faithful” to the game, “there are some big changes.”

However, he assures Game Informer that, “the tone and what the story’s trying to say is pretty faithful to the game.”

Druckmann also reveals that a second draft of the script has been completed, and that the team has done a table read.

Whether or not any actors were present is a mystery – no one has yet been cast, although last we heard, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is ready to go if they begin filming within the next few years. (Williams is 17 now, whereas Ellie is meant to be 14.)

No word on a potential Joel, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

The Last of Us is produced by Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi.
