The stage-to-screen adaptation of The Last Five Years has released its first trailer, and all signs are pointing towards a great musical.

The Last Five Years stars Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan in the lead (read: singing) roles, and both are clearly capable of selling us a great love story. Take a watch/listen:

As you can gather by the trailer and the title, the movie looks at a failing five-year relationship.

The Last Five Years is based on the 2001 play of the same name by Jason Robert Brown. While the stage musical looks at Cathy and Jamie’s stories from different angles and rarely lets the characters directly interact with one another, the movie appears to keep them together for much of the movie – and in the same timeline. Reports indicate that the film – like the play – only has one of the two characters singing at a time.

The film is directed by Richard LaGravenese, who also wrote and produced the movie. It will hit theaters early next year.

Kendrick has upped her movie musical roles in recent years. Pitch Perfect, this month’s Into the Woods, and next year’s Pitch Perfect 2 are all films that put her vocals on display.

Meanwhile, viewers will recognize Jordan from roles in NBC’s television musical Smash, Joyful Noise, and his appearance in the documentary Six By Sondheim.
