All of the excitement and drama surrounding The Interview led over two million people to watch the movie legally over the holiday weekend.

Sony announced on Sunday that the Seth Rogen and James Franco-led The Interview made $15 million from customers who purchased the film on Google Play, YouTube, Xbox, and a couple other official outlets. The movie was priced at $5.99 for rent and $14.99 to purchase (both options were high-definition streams).

The studio’s decision to announce the number of sales is a landmark moment in and of itself. These numbers are typically never shared.

The film has also made just over $3 million at small theaters who agreed to run the movie beginning December 25 after the big chains bailed out.

These totals don’t take into consideration the number of people who illegally downloaded the film through bit torrent. Reports suggest that the film was pirated over 2 million times in its first couple days.

Even if the film approaches the $20 million mark in theater and online revenue, which seems likely, the movie will be very far from making back what it cost Sony – and that’s not including the damage from the major hack.

It’s great to see that so many people purchased the film online, but it’s a shame that so many people decided to pirate it. By purchasing the film, customers were saying that they were happy to support a new movie by watching it in the comfort of their own home.

In related news, The Interview was released on iTunes on Sunday after Apple failed to make a deal with Sony in time for the surprise Christmas Eve release.
