First announced over a year ago, The Incredibles director Brad Bird today offered an update on the highly-anticipated sequel.

Speaking to NPR this week, Bird revealed that The Incredibles 2 is currently “percolating.”

“I’m just staring to write it, so we’ll see what happens,” he said.

It’s interesting that the Incredibles sequel was announced in March 2014, but Bird is just getting started on the film now. This means we will have to wait another few years before the movie hits theaters, if the writing of the script is only just beginning.

The Incredibles is one Pixar film moviegoers have been eager to see a sequel for. The film ended on a great cliffhanger, with the superhero family preparing to fight a new villain called the Underminer.

It remains to be seen if The Incredibles 2 will pick up the Underminer plot line, or if the sequel will time jump several years, like Pixar did with Toy Story 3. Given the wait between The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, it’d make sense for there to be a big time jump, with the kids (including Jack-Jack!) all grown up.

At the same time they announced the new Incredibles last year, Pixar also confirmed Cars 3. We haven’t heard much about the Cars threequel.

Pixar is also at work on a fourth installment of Toy Story which hits theaters June 2017. Meanwhile, the studio will release two original films this year: Inside Out this June and The Good Dinosaur this November.
