The New York Times has a big look at Lionsgate’s plans for its first two Hunger Games theme park lands.

Last month we told you Lionsgate was planning to purchase land in the Atlanta area for their first Hunger Games park in the United States, and now the studio has confirmed that report with the NYT.

The first of two planned Hunger Games lands, which opens next year in Dubai’s upcoming Motiongate park, will include a couple of thrill rides and a District 12 theme. The full piece of concept art is pictured below:

“After passing through the gates, visitors will arrive in a re-creation of the fictional District 12, a mining region where Katniss grew up,” writes the NYT. “There will be costumed characters and real-life versions of Peeta Mellark’s bakery* and the Hob black market.

“A lavish roller coaster will be designed to resemble the movies’ high-speed Capitol trains,” and “a simulator-style ride, similar to Disney’s well-known Star Tours attraction, will take people on a hovercraft tour of Panem, the post-apocalyptic nation where The Hunger Games takes place.”

As for why Lionsgate is moving forward with Hunger Games parks, Lionsgate’s chief creative officer Tim Palen explains, “The more we thought about it, the more we realized there was a major opportunity — not just to create something smart and captivating that ‘Hunger Games’ fans would love, but to bring all of our franchises alive in new ways.”

Atlanta’s Hunger Games land will exist in a new park called Avatron Smart Park which “hopes” to open by 2019. That may seem like a long time away — especially considering the “final” Hunger Games movie opens later this month — but as the NYT reminds us, the studio is hoping to expand the franchise with spinoffs. “Lionsgate has said that it wanted to eventually pursue spinoffs. (It is not by accident, for instance, that the tagline for the coming movie is “the fire will burn forever.”) But no timing is certain,” the newspaper writes.

In addition to elements designed around the Katinss-led story, the New York Times says the agreements for the two parks also call for attractions themed around the studio’s other hits including Divergent, Twilight, Now You See Me (illusionists), and Step Up (dance shows).

Do these attractions make you want to visit a ‘Hunger Games’ park?
