Online retailer Amazon announced this morning that The Hunger Games trilogy has surpassed the Harry Potter series in overall sales!

The record includes both physical and eBook versions of the series. Amazon’s Editorial Director of Books and Kindle said in a press release, “to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time. Customers love these books and all three titles are consistently on our Top 10 lists in both print and Kindle formats, and ‘The Hunger Games’ is also the most-borrowed book in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.”

So how could this have happened when raw numbers indicate Harry Potter worldwide still has sold millions upon millions more copies? When Harry Potter books made their initial debuts, more people were probably buying them in book stores than online. These days, one of the prime ways to grab a copy of a book is through a site like Amazon.

A few weeks ago Amazon UK announced that Fifty Shades had surpassed Harry Potter in United Kingdom sales.
