‘The Hook-Up Experiment’ by Emma Hart review:
I’m still fairly new to reading books by Emma Hart, who I discovered in my journey to reading more rom-coms. I loved both Miss Fix-It and Miss Mechanic, however I had some mixed feelings about The Upside to Being Single so I was a bit worried going into this one.
All of my worries quickly vanished once I dove into The Hook-Up Experiment and I instantly fell in love with Peyton and Elliot. The two characters have a history, but it isn’t a good one.
Not only do they have some serious tension from everything that went down between them in high school, but there is also some serious sexual tension as well. Their minds might hate each other, but their bodies certainly don’t and it’s the perfect recipe for a great hate-to-love story.
“What the fuck was I thinking? Oh, that’s right. I wasn’t. I hadn’t actually thought about the fact I was going to have sex with Elliott Sloane. I hadn’t thought about what it would feel like to kiss him or have his hands on my body. I hadn’t stopped to consider what it would feel like to have my naked body under his, or his hands gripping my hips as he fucked me from behind. I hadn’t stopped to think for a second that he might be a fucking dirty talker. Nope. It was classic Peyton. Do, don’t think. Get on with it, don’t consider it.”
In the beginning Peyton and Elliot are all business, they both need to keep things casual and are sure their mutual hatred will ensure that it stays that way. However, once the pair actually have time to learn more about each other as well as air out things from the past, they realize that keeping things casual will be harder than they imagined.
There is a bit of drama involved in The Hook-Up Experiment, thanks to Elliot’s upcoming custody battle. As well as Peyton’s fights with her brother Dominic who also has a not so secret crush on her bff Chloe. However, the drama never takes away from the fun, flirty theme of the book and I thoroughly enjoyed myself the entire way through.
“He should not have been able to be so gentle with her. And, honestly, to my annoyance, the hottest thing I’d seen in a long time was him picking up his sick toddler while she was wrapped in a hot pink towel. How was I ever supposed to scratch that out of my mind? Oh. That’s right. I wasn’t. I slammed the pizza crust into the box and snatched up another piece, only to tear off a bite. I was almost a Neanderthal, and this was almost certainly pizza abuse. No pizza deserved to be eaten by a pack of wild dogs. Which was how my annoyance was making me eat this. Like a savage. A sexually-frustrated, emotionally confused savage.”
Peyton and Elliot’s chemistry keeps the pages of the book sizzling and brimming with passion. Anyone with a soft spot for kids and/or single parent storylines will just fall in love with Elliot’s daughter. The whole situation surrounding his daughter will give readers lots of warm fuzzy feelings that balances out the steamy bedroom scenes nicely.
There’s also a good amount of set-up for the next novel in the duet The Dating Experiment which will be Dominic and Chloe’s story. I can’t wait to find out what happens with this pair as well as get a chance to catch up with the whole group again!
