A great and clever new poster for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released by the director today and features the 13 Hobbit dwarves you’ll see in the story.

The poster was designed in that they “fill” the entire poster. To the casual moviegoer these characters may not seem relevant, but readers of J.R.R. Tolkein’s story know their influence.

Who are the dwarves? Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Thorin Oakenshield, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, and Ori. These 13 gentlemen were introduced by Gandalf in last year’s Hobbit trailer in a manner that is humorous like this poster.

The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the wild, through treacherous lands swarming with goblins and orcs, deadly wargs and giant spiders, shapeshifters and sorcerers.

Earlier this week a poster featuring solely Bilbo was released. See An Unexpected Journey in theaters December 14, 2012.
