The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug director Peter Jackson has released the first video blog for The Hobbit sequel, which features loads of behind-the-scenes footage.

Director Peter Jackson has released yet another one of his incredible behind-the-scenes video blogs, which were massively popular with fans during the post-production of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Now the director has released the first video blog from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug production, which will be hitting theaters December 13 of this year. Check out the behind-the-scenes video below:

Sadly, Jackson also announced via the vlog that they won’t be attending Comic-Con this year, as they’ll still be shooting footage for the film. He felt it was better that they didn’t try to salvage footage that he wouldn’t be 100% happy with to send down for fans to watch.

Recently, we’ve seen quite a bit of Hobbit news, as the first trailer was released for Desolation of Smaug, along with a new video of Orlando Bloom as Legolas. We also got a picture from Jackson that showed him and Ian McKellen on his last day of filming as Gandalf.

Peter Jackson revealed in interviews that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition would include 20 – 25 minutes of footage not seen in theaters, pushing the film well over 3 hours.

No date has been set for An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition’s release, but an accidental announcement from Warner Bros. suggested it would hit store shelves by the end of 2013.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug release date is set for December 13, 2013.
