The first trailer for The Hobbit sequel The Desolation of Smaug appears to be on the horizon, and our guess is that it’ll debut with Man of Steel.

The British Board of Film Classification recently approved a 2 minute Desolation of Smaug trailer, meaning that it’s completed and ready for release.

When could it debut? Looking ahead at the film calendar, the obvious choice is Man of Steel since both franchises are owned by Warner Brothers.

UPDATE: At least one site, a blog, says that it will indeed appear with Man of Steel but premiere online two days earlier (Wednesday, June 12).

The trailer was approved by the BBFC on Wednesday. Man of Steel opens in theaters on June 14, meaning that the Desolation of Smaug trailer could debut online a few days in advance. When it does, we’ll be sure to bring it to you. An imminent trailer means a poster could be on the horizon too.

An Unexpected Journey, the first film in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, opened last December and went on to make $1 billion worldwide.

Just yesterday, we received our first look at Evangeline Lilly’s Desolation of Smaug character Tauriel. The Hobbit sequel hits theaters December 14.
