You can’t visit the home of a Lord of the Rings fan without finding the trilogy’s Extended Editions on their shelves next to their Gandalf figurine. These Middle Earth dwellers will be pleased to know that The Hobbit will be getting the extended treatment too.

Word came via a Warner Bros. press release noting upcoming film releases during their 90th anniversary. “And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4).”

A release date has not been set, but you can expect the first Hobbit Extended Edition to arrive sometime in 2013.

The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions were released on Blu-ray in June 2011 to much fanfare. Some fans were disappointed that the Blu-ray set only included the extended versions and not the originals seen in theaters. That in turn affected the reviews of the set on Amazon. One can hope that Jackson and company are listening up and will consider including both versions of The Hobbit on their Blu-rays.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14. Part 2, The Desolation of Smaug will be released December 13, 2013. There and Back Again, part three, will be released July 18, 2014. Watch the latest An Unexpected Journey trailer!

Thanks, The One Ring.
