UPDATE: In addition, owners of this set will be able to watch a sneak peek of The Hobbit sequel The Desolation of Smaug on March 24 with Jackson himself:

Peter Jackson will host a live first look at “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second film in The Hobbit Trilogy, on Sunday, March 24 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern/Noon Pacific. Content will be streamed live and an edited version will be archived on the Trilogy’s official website. Access to the live event will be limited to holders of an UltraViolet code available by purchasing “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack or 2-Disc Special Edition DVD.

UPDATE 2: Warner Bros. has announced that it will be released in the U.K. on April 8.

The box art is below:

Despite splitting the one Hobbit book by Tolkien into three films, director Peter Jackson says that Extended Editions of the film are still planned. Today’s announcement says an Extended Edition is set for just before the holiday season. Jackson said in December that An Unexpected Journey‘s Extended Edition will clock in at over three hours, meaning the film has at least twenty minutes of additional footage.

The Extended Edition was not announced today, so we’ll assume it’ll come out later this year – perhaps when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters in December.

Pre-order links are not yet available from Amazon. When they are, we’ll share ’em with you.
