The highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give finally has a release date!

George Tillman Jr’s umping adaptation of author Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give might have experienced a major setback, but that doesn’t mean fans will have to wait until next year to see the film hit the big screen.

According to The Wrap, the film, which like the book is inspired by the Black Lives Matters movement, is set to hit theaters this fall on October 19, 2018.

That’s a date that’s fast approaching, and one that’s incredibly impressive given that the film had to undergo major reshoots after cutting YouTube star Kian Lawley from the movie after videos of the young star uttering racial slurs.

As we learned just last month, Lawley has officially been replaced by Riverdale star KJ Apa who jumped right into reshoots for the role of main character Starr Carter’s (Amandla Stenberg) boyfriend Chris.

The upcoming drama centers on an African American teenager named Starr who, while living and growing up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood, attends a charter school in a wealthy neighborhood across the city.

Her two worlds collide after Starr becomes the only witness in a police officer shooting that leaves her unarmed childhood friend dead. From there, she must figure out how to find her voice and speak her truth in an effort to bring justice to his murder.

As those who’ve read Angie Thomas’ book know, The Hate U Give is an incredibly powerful story that sheds light on a major issue that’s currently plaguing America. It’s an important story that needs to be told, and we’re looking forward to seeing it come to life on the big screen this fall!

The Hate U Give hits theaters on October 19, 2018.
