Warner Bros. has delayed the release date of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby until the summer of 2013.

The Great Gatsby was originally planned to hit theaters December 25, but it was facing some serious competition in the Christmas release schedule. Warner Bros. blinked first as the likes of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Seth Rogen’s The Guilt Trip, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher, and Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 are all scheduled to open within a week of each other during that time. Also, we can’t forget about The Hobbit and Les Miserables, which are both slated for December releases.

Quite honestly, it would be surprising if another film doesn’t get shifted before December roles around, but as of yet The Great Gatsby is the only film to suffer from the over-crowded release slate.

Baz Luhrmann’s vision of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, to name a few. Warner Bros. president of distribution Dan Fellman had this to say:

We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.

The exact release date has not yet been revealed, and we’ll be sure to bring that to you when it is announced. What do you think of this decision?
