CBS announced during Super Bowl 50 that the current season of The Good Wife is its last. Describing it as a show with over “a hundred twists,” the commercial during the second quarter noted the biggest shocker of all: that this was “the last nine episodes” of the show.

The commercial looked like this, surprising viewers around the world:

Glenn Geller, President of CBS Entertainment, and David Stapf said in a statement, “It’s never easy to say goodbye to one of the crown jewels of your network and studio, much less to a show that is among the best on television…But it also feels very right to end with the seven-year story its creators envisioned, and to celebrate the show’s final run while at the top of its creative game.”

The show has been marked with a series of big departures. Josh Charles, who played Will Gardner, left in a shower of bullets in season 5. Archie Panjabi, who played Kalinda Sharma, left at the end of season 6 after a contentious relationship with star Julianna Margulies. Finally, creators Robert and Michelle King recently announced their departure after the current season.

Margulies said about today’s announcement, “As an actress and a producer, it has been an absolute honor to be a part of a series that, throughout seven years, never settled on being just good… but always strived to be extraordinary. I have witnessed magic happen when Robert and Michelle King put pen to paper, and it has been a privilege to be in the company of their brilliance.”

The ratings for the show have been on the decline (about a 1.06 same-day ratings for the 18-49 year old key demographic), but reports were mixed on how CBS would handle it when the Kings announced their departure from the show.
