The Good Place ended magnificently, and we can’t forking wait to see what’s in store for season 3.
After an awesome season 2 finale, The Good Place has left us both satisfied with where the story went and excited to see what happens next. Spoilers below, obviously!
With season 3 likely airing around late September 2018 — both seasons so far have started in September — we have a few months to theorize after last season’s cliffhanger. From the Good Place, to the Not-Actually-Good-Place, to the world of the living (we think), The Good Place has taken us on a journey and it looks like it can only get more exciting from here.
A reunion
The finale ended with Eleanor and Chidi meeting in the real world for the first time, neither of them knowing about their past relationship with the other. But it seems that once more, Eleanor is going to be learning ethics from Chidi… and maybe she’ll help him with his indecisiveness, too.
Presumably, this will lead the pair to try and find their friends. The finale had a surprising lack of Jason and Tahani, although it seems that they have also been sent back to their lives before they died. Will Chidi and Eleanor have to track them down? Will they even know to look for them? Jason might be relatively easy to find, but Tahani moves in high circles, and might be much more unapproachable.
Everyone becomes a better person
Does anyone know that they almost died? Eleanor realized that she had a near-death experience, but that might not be the case for the others — or at any rate, their near-death experience may not have had the same emotional impact.
Eleanor is already trying to become a better person, but Chidi, Tahani and Jason need stronger motivation, and in the world of the living that might be harder to come by. Michael might find himself having to intervene once again.
Probably the strongest message that season 2 left us was that it’s our friendships with other people that motivate us to change. Maybe when the gang is together, they’ll realize that through friendship, they can all become better people.
Feelings!Talk
Chidi finally acknowledged his feelings for Eleanor in the season finale, simultaneously proving that his hang-ups about her were just about his anxiety and that he’s truly changing as a person.
But unfortunately, they were sent back to their old lives before they had a chance to discuss their feelings… again! Let’s hope we don’t have to wait for another reboot for these two to talk about their feelings and properly acknowledge their love.
And what about Jason and Janet? Janet has changed so much that she’s “not a Janet anymore.” What does that mean? We saw her watching over him in the finale (apparently, only him.) Will she intervene to help him, like Michael did? Will Tahani feel jealous of Jason’s new relationship, or will she find someone of her own? Or maybe, she’ll go on a journey to find herself.
The Good Place — or the Bad Place?
So far, nobody has seen the Good Place, to the extent that it almost makes us wonder if the Good Place actually exists. It must exist, right?
But in order to get there, Eleanor and her friends are going to have to figure out a way to persuade not only the Judge, but everyone else in the Bad Place, to change the entire system that governs the afterlife. That’s going to be very challenging, and could easily take up all of season 3.
(That is, assuming that the characters are either in a simulation or going to die shortly after they do whatever it is that Michael and the Judge are hoping to see. We still have no idea if they really came back to life or not.)
But do we really want the story to lead our characters to the Good Place? While it would be great for them to finally have their eternal rest, that might not be the most exciting destiny for the show.
What if they don’t actually end up in the Good Place? It might be more interesting to see Eleanor and her friends become part of the staff for the Rehabilitation Place — or whatever it could be called — helping the newly-dead find their better selves.
Whatever is in store for season 3, it’s probably going to be awesome, and we can’t wait!
