Following speculation earlier this week, Pixar has now confirmed that The Good Dinosaur director Bob Peterson has left the production.

This is the fourth time that Pixar has removed a director from their position mid-film.

Pixar president Ed Catmull confirmed the news and told the Los Angeles Times:

“All directors get really deep in their films. Sometimes you just need a different perspective to get the idea out. Sometimes directors … are so deeply embedded in their ideas it actually takes someone else to finish it up. I would go so far as to argue that a lot of live-action films would be better off with that same process.”

While Catmull doesn’t specifically explain why it was that Peterson had to go, he does seem confident that the decision was a good one and doesn’t mean that the film is in danger of failing critically.

Several Pixar creatives are filling in for Peterson until a new director is named. Those include Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich, and Brave director Mark Andrews, according to the LA Times.

Peterson has been attached to The Good Dinosaur from the beginning. Having gotten his start at the studio as an animator on Toy Story, he went on to co-direct Up and is credited with conceiving the idea for The Good Dinosaur.

The Good Dinosaur is slated for release May 30, 2014. Currently that plan is still in place, although it’s worth noting that a teaser trailer for the film still has not seen the light of day even though it should have appeared back with Monsters University as Pixar usually does.
