Theo is out for revenge after Ryan cost him his family. Will Ryan finally get a step ahead of Strauss’ best student? Check out our recap of The Following season 3, episode 9.

‘The Following’ season 3, episode 9 recap

The episode opens with Joe Carroll standing over Gwen with a knife, and Ryan asks, “So how do we do this?” WHAT? *False Alarm* It was just a dream, and when Ryan wakes in the living room and sees Joe on TV, he seems to blame the creepy dream on that.

Theo rifles through boxes, books, and even slices open all the couch cushions and the back of a painting in the office in search of something. In the midst of his rampage, he finds a book full of numbers hidden in the cushions. The security guard confronts him and Theo slices his throat. Death #1. When Theo leaves, we see that the name tag for the office reads Juliana Barnes (AKA the lady that Mark killed that was Strauss’ go between).

Ryan is escorting Gwen to work to ensure her safety. He gets pulled over by a cop. Rather than them approaching the vehicle, they immediately demand that he show them his hands and ask him to exit the car. When they see his gun, they demand that he hit the ground. He tells them he’s FBI, and they release him. They tell him that the computer had his car listed as stolen, and he was supposedly armed and dangerous. This reeks of Theo.

Mike hasn’t given up hope on catching Mark, and when a fellow FBI agent tells him that a missing laptop (i.e., the one Tom stole) could be the key to finding him, he is visibly excited. Max sees and hears the exchange and is clearly worried about Mike’s intentions.

Ryan and company arrive at Juliana’s office, and after they are unsuccessful at finding much, Ryan theorizes that maybe Theo is trying to contact Strauss’ other students. Maybe for a few followers of his own?

Theo goes to a gun range and makes a friend out of another former soldier. Theo is sporting some very Teen Wolf-like mutton chops. Yikes.

Daisy sighting! She’s working at a strip club, and a customer propositions her to come by his place later that night for a little one-on-one show. Creepy.

Joe’s court appointed attorney gives him a run down of what his final day will be like. She makes it clear that she doesn’t want to be there, and Joe zones out a bit. He sees Theo Noble’s picture on the newspaper in her bag and flashes back to a memory he has of that young man asking him about whether or not Poe could have been the perpetrator of some of the deaths he wrote about. Joe tells his attorney that as a last request he would like her to tell Ryan that he has information for him regarding ‘the man he’s looking for’ (AKA Theo Noble).

Gwen shows up at FBI headquarters to tell Ryan that she’s under review for over-prescribing meds, and Ryan knows that it’s Theo’s dirty work. He promises her that he will handle this.

Daisy is getting cozy with the customer from earlier when the guy starts moving really fast. She grabs a knife from her bag and kills him before he can get any further. She then is startled by Mark Gray who is watching her through the sliding glass door of the man’s home. He chases her through the house, limping the whole way, and she hides in the kitchen pantry on the first floor.

‘Luke’ pulls her out of the closet and tells her that Mark drowned. She’s speaking to ‘Luke.’ So, yeah, that happened. Apparently ‘Luke’ is firmly in control at the moment.

‘Luke’ drags her outside into the backyard, and in a desperate attempt to save her own life, she tells him that she knows how to get to Mike Weston. ‘Luke’ pauses.

Theo and his new soldier buddy are bonding over a beer. Theo promises that he can help this guy get back all he’s lost.

Daisy shows ‘Luke’ that the laptop they were using to spy on Max has been used regularly since the raid. She tells him that if they can figure out who has it, they can use him to get to Mike. Considering that Tom has it and is secretly pissed at Mike for sleeping with Max, we’re not sold that he wouldn’t take their offer.

Theo kills the man from the treadmill, AKA the man that cost the soldier guy his military career. The soldier pukes in the kitchen sink in shock, and Theo talks the guy into becoming ‘The One’ like Neo on The Matrix.

When the soldier tells Theo that he left his mask in the kitchen, the soldier borrows Theo’s phone to call his ex-wife and rub his new status as “the One” in her face. The FBI traces the call and discovers the crime scene.

Gary, the soldier, is being used by Theo to get into the high security portion of the prison where Joe Carroll is being held. He takes his station outside Joe’s cell. Theo then instructs Gary to “tell him Theo says hello.”

When Gary begins addressing Carroll, Carroll is curious if this guy was sent by Theo to rescue him. Theo then gets to the heart of the issue: he needs the key to unlocking Strauss’ secret code. He promises Joe immortality in the form of murders made in his name as recompense for his help.

Max and Mike are close to tracking down Mark’s laptop, and Tom is flustered by it. He goes to his locker and smashes it to smithereens before they can assign any of the blame to him. Max and Mike mention to Ryan that there might be another mole.

Theo and Joe have a bit of a standoff, and when Gary gets made a little early, Joe kills him.

Ryan visits Joe. Ryan just wants to know where Theo is, or what Joe knows about Theo. They’re having a conversation, and Ryan loses it the second Joe mentions Gwen. Ryan tells Joe that he’s a disease, and that tomorrow when they kill him, he will be cured.

Ryan immediately goes for a drink, but before he can drink a drop, Gwen startles him and he drops the glass. Ryan confesses to her meaning more to him than anyone else, and we then see that she’s pregnant.
