The Following has been cancelled by Fox, which means there will be no season 4.

It’s a sad day for The Following and Kevin Bacon fans. The actor’s thriller series has been axed by Fox after surviving three seasons of the renewal gauntlet. This means May 18’s two-hour finale will be its last.

TVLine brings us the news of the show’s cancellation. According to them, the show opened with more than 10 million viewers and remained fairly steady across its first season.

However, season 2 and 3 have steadily dropped in viewership, bottoming out at a measly 3 million per episode, making The Following the lowest-rated Monday night television show, not counting The CW’s lineup.

The numbers don’t lie, and it’s not surprising Fox decided to cut its losses. However, The Following season 3 has changed the very core of the show, and while some fans may not be happy with its direction, it certainly is offering its audience something different from the last two years.

It’s unfortunate we won’t be getting a season 4, especially considering Ryan Hardy’s current direction. Our only hope is that the team can wrap up the story enough to satisfy fans and not leave us hanging with too many unanswered questions.

Is it too much to ask for Ryan, Max, and Mike to get happy endings? For this show…maybe. As Kevin Bacon reminds us, there has been an awful lot of blood over the last few years.

The Following season 3, episode 12, “The Edge,” and episode 13, “A Simple Trade,” will air on May 11 starting at 8:00 p.m. ET. The finale episodes, “Dead or Alive” and “The Reckoning,” will air on May 18 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
