The Flash season 2 has cast the voice of its Big Bad, Zoom.

Tony Todd will voice Zoom beginning in The Flash season 2, episode 2, which will be titled “Flash of Two Worlds.”

“Last year, with the Reverse Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different,” explains executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

“Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”

Todd’s numerous credits include voice work in the DC Animated Universe as Augustus Freeman/Icon in Young Justice. He has also appeared in Chuck, 24 and The Young and the Restless.

Kreisberg says the show will draw out the mystery of Zoom “like a horror movie — ‘who’s the killer? Who’s under the mask?’” This is in contrast to season 1, which revealed that Harrison Wells was the Reverse Flash (sort of) in the mid-season finale — much earlier than expected.

Part of that mystery will be Zoom’s suit. “In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive,” Kreisberg teases. “There’s no skin showing. For all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.”

As for Zoom’s identity (Hunter Zolomon in the comics), Kreisberg says, “[H]opefully comic book fans will be happy because we’ve come up with a clever way to spin the tale, but that also makes it exciting for the people who aren’t as familiar with the comics and are just enjoying the show on its own terms.”

Of Zoom’s motivation, Kreisberg explains that like the Reverse Flash, who was trying to get back to his own time, “Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season… simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.”

The Flash season 2 premieres Tuesday, October 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
