The Flash season 2 will introduce a number of new characters, and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg shares some details on a few of them.

If season 1 was about time travel, Kreisberg tells EW season 2 will focus on Earth-Two, “and the concept of the multiverse, and the concept of doppelgängers.”

He adds, “We’ve been having a lot of fun with that and getting glimpses of Earth-Two probably sooner than people would’ve thought.” And while the show “still has those characters and that camaraderie” that made season 1 great, “our villains are coming from a brand new place and we’re dealing with different concepts, and it’s just really exciting.”

Season 2 will, with that in mind, be introducing a number of new characters. Kreisberg explains what we can expect from a few of them.

Jay Garrick

Played by: Teddy Sears

In the DC Comics, Jay Garrick is the first Flash. When he arrives on the scene in The Flash season 2, “There’s a little condescension from Jay,” Kreisberg says. He uses the words “world-weary” to destroy the veteran hero. “He’s seen a lot of darkness, and it’s jaded him a little bit. He thinks Barry can be a bit naïve about the way the world works.”

However, Jay won’t be the only one teaching in his dynamic with Barry. “One of Barry’s greatest gifts — and truly it’s one of Grant’s greatest gifts, too — is he’s got such an infectious energy and such a purity of heart that he makes you want to be a better person,” Kreisberg says.

With that in mind, “As much as Barry learns from Jay about being The Flash, Jay learns just as much about being a good person from Barry.”

Wally West

Played by: Keiynan Lonsdale

In the world of the DC Comics, Wally West is the nephew of Iris; he’s also a speedster who becomes Kid Flash — and eventually takes on the mantle of The Flash as well. But that is not where he’ll start when he first appears on The Flash.

Kreisberg draws a parallel between Wally and Colton Haynes’ Roy Harper on Arrow. As Roy eventually became Arsenal, Kreisberg says he “wouldn’t be surprised if one day Wally West becomes Kid Flash.”

Additionally, the EP explains that Wally’s introduction will help Barry grow as a person. “Suddenly introducing him to a bit of a wayward kid who has some attitude problems and some authority issues and is quick with a sassy remark — all of which is very Wally West — and then watching Wally integrate into S.T.A.R. Labs universe, but also just the world of these characters, is going to be a lot of the fun of the back half of the year.”

Zoom

Played by: Unknown; voiced by Tony Todd

In the DC Comics, Zoom is actually one of Wally West’s villains and is one of the multiple Reverse Flashes. However, he won’t be a retread of Eobard Thawne from season 1, Kreisberg promises.

“We wanted another speedster as a villain, but we wanted to do something slightly different,” Kreisberg says. “Reverse Flash felt like a warrior, and what we wanted this time was something more akin to a monster. He describes Zoom as looking like “a demon,” calling the mask “really scary” and “more horrific.”

Kreisberg calls his motives “very specific” and “very clean.” The EP adds, “When we open the season, he’s a villain of Earth-Two, and now he has access to Earth-One” due to the wormhole that opened up over Central City in the season 1 finale. “Watching how Zoom enacts his plan is the plot of the first nine episodes.”

Patty Spivot

Played by: Shantel VanSanten

In the comics, Patty Spivot works for the police and is a love interest for Barry. In The Flash, Patty will be joining Joe West’s anti-metahuman task force.

Kreisberg teases that Patty has “a very specific reason for wanting to fight metahumans, which we’ll learn about during the course of the season.” Moreover, she and Barry will bond because she, like Barry, is “a science nerd.” However, “she also loves the action.”

In that vein, Patty will prove herself against a metahuman, which convinces Joe to let her join. “At a key moment early on, Patty is the only cop who stands her ground, and that proves to Joe that she’s got what it takes,” Kreisberg previews.

The Flash season 2 premieres Tuesday, October 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
