The secret role of television’s first Flash, John Wesley Shipp, in the upcoming Flash series has now been revealed.

Shipp, who played Barry Allen in the ’90s CBS Flash series, will be playing Barry’s father, Henry Allen, reports THR.

We guessed as much based on Shipp’s appearance in the five-minute Flash trailer released at the CW Upfront. Shipp appears in the flashback to Barry’s childhood as well as in an Allen family photo.

Shipp will appear in the premiere episode and his role will be recurring.

“Given his history with The Flash, Andrew [Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry’s father and that was John Wesley Shipp,” says executive producer Greg Berlanti. “He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes.”

Barry’s mother, Nora, was murdered when Barry was 11 when a mysterious blur entered the Allen house. Henry was convicted of her murder and is serving a life sentence. Barry was taken in by the West family and, as a crime scene investigator, now seeks a way to free him.

Shipp’s Flash series aired 22 episodes during the 1990-91 season. A few of Shipp’s many other television credits include Dawson’s Creek, which Berlanti was also a producer on; One Life to Live; and most recently on Teen Wolf.

Alongside Shipp, the Flash premiere will also feature an appearance of Arrow star Stephen Amell when Barry visits Starling City to get advice from Oliver Queen.

The Flash will air on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET in front of veteran drama Supernatural this fall.
