The Flash‘s Grant Gustin teases tonight’s finale and season 2 while Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim teases season 4 and Legends of Tomorrow.
In tonight’s Flash season finale, the conflict between Barry Allen and his mother’s killer, the Reverse Flash, comes to a head. It also appears that Barry will travel to the past to save his mother. Comic book fans may recognize said premise from the Flashpoint storyline, in which Barry saves his mother but changes the rest of the world to the point of disaster.
With this in mind, there’s a lot of ways the finale could take the series going into season 2. Gustin says, “The finale doesn’t reset things, but it is a little bit of a new show next year.”

As for season 2, “There are no scripts yet, but [the producers have] broken the second season to me and it’s going to amazing. It’s going to be even more comic book-y, which is fun, and it’s going to go in the direction I want to go with Barry, which is a little more confident and cocky with his powers. Tonally, I think we’ll have even more of a brighter show.”
Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim has also teased a “lighter tone” for season 4, saying, “there was sort of a collective desire on all of [the writers’] parts to try to inject a little bit more lightness into the show, a little bit more humor.
“It’s not going to radically change,” he clarifies. “The show’s still going to be the show but in terms of tone we’re coming off a very very hard season for all of our characters. We wanted to try to mix it up a little bit.”

As for the newest member of the DC family, the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow, Gustin had a bit of a tease about its connection to Arrow and The Flash: “It’s all one show in some ways. Like, I’m on Flash, but as far as a lot of those other characters are concerned, they’re just on three TV shows at one time, which is really cool.”
He gives an example: “Wentworth [Miller, who plays Captain Cold] and Dominic [Purcell, who plays Heat Wave] are on Legends, but they’ll be on Arrow and Flash, too. It’s like a revolving door for all three shows.”
Guggenheim adds that Legends “is going to be bigger, louder, more ambitious even than Flash and Arrow. I think Flash raised the bar on Arrow in terms of adding superheroes and we’re looking to now have the show raise the bar on Flash so you feel like the shows are getting bigger and bigger.
“One thing we sort of always tell you is that with Flash we’re really trying to provide a feature film every week. With this show we’re trying to provide a summer blockbuster every week.”
The Flash season finale, “Fast Enough,” airs May 19 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
