When the Blu-ray edition of The Fault in Our Stars hits shelves on September 16, fans will be treated to a version of the film that is chock full of extra features. Hypable recently sat down with TFIOS director Josh Boone to talk about what we can expect from the upcoming Blu-ray release of the film.

The Fault in Our Stars “Little Infinities Edition” Blu-ray boasts more special features than we can even begin to list and if there’s one thing that’s for certain, it’s that director Josh Boone is excited for fans to experience all of it — specifically the things that didn’t make it into the theatrical version of the film.

“Obviously what you saw in theaters is my director’s cut, but to be able to show the fans everything else is really exciting!” Boone told Hypable. “We just tried to load [the Blu-ray] up as much as we possibly could.”

Another feature Boone is particularly excited for fans to experience is the audio commentary he recorded with author John Green, which he describes as a mixture of “serious and funny.” Boone says that part of the extra features was particularly fun to take part in not only because he and Green are friends, but also because he himself is a huge fan of audio commentaries.

“We kind of recorded it at the end of a very long press tour for John and for me although, mine wasn’t as intense as what John had to do.” said Boone of the audio commentary. “So actually having a conversation about the movie together was just really fun because we hadn’t really done that. We’ve done a lot of our interviews solo so it was nice to get together and kind of just hang out.”

As for what fans can expect from the extended cut of the film, Boone explained that while they tried to jam pack it with as much as possible, the rule they went by was that if it didn’t flow with the director’s cut of the film, they cut it from the extended version fans will be able to watch on the Blu-ray when it hits shelves on September 16. What didn’t make it into the extended cut was then included as part of the deleted scenes.

While Boone didn’t want to give too much away, he did tease that fans could expect to see an extended cut of a few scenes with Hazel and her mom, along with an extended cut of the ambulance scene. As for the deleted scenes, the director says fans can expect to see a lot more of Isaac (played by actor Nat Wolff.)

When we asked Boone if he had any advice for future directors wishing to tackle any of Green’s other beloved novels now that he has successfully managed to bring The Fault In Our Stars to life, the director had this to say:

“The main thing is tone and tone is everything. Paper Towns is so much fun — I think the most difficult thing is the style of speech. I think the tone is the key to every movie you make.” said Boone.

Finally, in honor of our newly launched Hypable staff challenge in which our writers pick the top five books that have left a lasting impression on them, we asked Boone to give us his quick fire pick of the five books that define him. But before you fault the director for not including any of John Green’s books in his top five, please note that for the sake of keeping things interesting, we asked Josh to refrain from including them in his list as we felt like The Fault in Our Stars was a bit of a given.

The five books that define ‘TFIOS’ director Josh Boone:

1. VALIS by Phillip K. Dick
Josh says: “I’ve been a gigantic Phillip K. Dick fan since I was a kid. One of my favorite movies is A Scanner Darkly because it’s one of the only movies ever made where the movie is the exact same tone as the book. That being said, VALIS is the first book I ever read by him so I would have to go with that.”

2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Josh says: “I’ve read it six, seven, eight times– I think every teenager should read that book.”

3. Shadowland by Peter Straub
Josh says: “One of my all time favorite books.”

4. Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Josh says: “Also one of my favorites– I just love it.”

5. The Stand by Stephen King
Josh says: “You asked me earlier what the key to success is and I mean, I just try to hold myself accountable to the kid who read The Stand when he was 12. I think if you can do for a living what you loved when you were young, you’re happier and that’s what I try to do. I loved Stephen King when I was a kid and I loved The Wonder Years and Cameron Crowe movies and a bunch of other stuff so I just try to do all those and just hope that’ll keep me busy and happy.”
