Relativity media’s The Family trailer dropped this week featuring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones.

De Niro and Pfeiffer make their returns to the mafia genre in Luc Besson’s darkly comedic crime thriller about a retired Mafioso (De Niro) and his family as they adjust to life in the witness protection program.

We haven’t seen De Niro put on his mob boss shoes in many years, but it looks from the trailer like they still fit just as well as they always did. Martin Scorsese, who directed De Niro in genre films Goodfellas and Casino, executive produced the film scheduled to hit theaters this fall.

In the trailer we meet the Mazoni family, a four-piece clan from Brooklyn who can’t seem to shake their mob mentality. This is much to the chagrin of the federal marshal assigned to their case, played by Tommy Lee Jones.

Jones’ character places the family in Normandy, France where they become the “Blake” family. Inevitably, hi-jinks ensue.

Pfeiffer plays the tough-talking matriarch of the family, who we see blowing up a grocery store after being insulted by its owners. The Mazoni’s offspring  prove to be just as “connected” as their parents, resorting to violence and corruption at their new high school.

Diana Agron takes a break from Glee to play the couple’s feisty daughter who is seen fighting off a frisky teenage boy with a tennis racket. John D’Leo, who first caught our attention in The Wrestler , plays their bribe-taking son.

Besson (Taken, The Transporter) directed and penned the screenplay for the flick alongside Michael Caleo, who has written episodes of The Sopranos and Rescue Me. The film is based on the novel Malavita by Tonino Benacquista.

The Family is set to open in theaters on Sept.20.

What do you think about De Niro’s return to the mob genre?
