ABC’s Duets debuted its first episode tonight with eight duets and a performance of “Let Me Entertain You” by the judges – Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Robin Thicke and Jennifer Nettles.

Most singing competitions start off the season with multiple audition episodes. Not this one. It went straight for the duets – two for each star – with a few minutes of audition tape before each contestant’s performance.

Jennifer Nettles and YouTube singer J Rome kicked off the duets with a performance of “Tonight,” receiving high praise from the judges. She later took the stage with Georgia native John Glosson for “Stay.”

For each duet, the three stars who didn’t perform, scored the amateur’s performance and presentation. Starting next week, the amateur at the bottom of the scoreboard will get the boot.

John Legend chose karaoke DJ Johnny Gray for a rendition of “Ordinary People,” followed by a duet of “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” with Virginia native Bridget Carrington.

Robin Thicke and recent college grad Olivia Chisholm took on “Lost Without You,” then sang “Magic” with Alexis Foster.

Kelly Clarkson held her auditions on her tour stage and picked the soulful Jason Farol as her first contestant, performing “Breaking Your Own Heart” together. She rounded off the show with a duet of “Stronger” with beauty school student Jordan Meredith.
