About ‘The Darkest Promise’ by Gena Showalter:

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with a sizzling Lords of the Underworld story about an iron-willed sovereign and the somber beauty who melts him with a glance

Possessed by the demon of Misery, Cameo isn’t allowed to experience joy. If she dares, her memory is wiped clean. With no other recourse, she sneaks into a land more fantastical than any fairy tale, determined to find the one man with the key to her redemption.

Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual rules his kingdom with a single unwavering focus: to build his army and annihilate his enemies. Nothing distracts him – until Cameo. He is relentless in his quest to make her smile and seduce her into his bed.

As dark forces conspire against them, threatening to destroy the fragile bond they’ve forged, the once-calm Lazarus grows crazed. Every heart-stopping kiss and wicked touch causes Cameo to teeter on the brink of happiness. But if she falls, she risks forgetting him forever.

‘The Darkest Promise’ by Gena Showalter review:

Lords of The Underworld is one of my favorite long running series, and The Darkest Promise proves once again that Gena Showalter is a creative genius. Not everyone is into paranormal romance, and those people are missing out on some of the most talented authors including Gena.

Gena is able to spin the most elaborate worlds filled with characters and creatures that baffle your imagination. There’s plenty of romance to keep your heart fluttering, when it’s not racing from all of the action the characters get themselves into. The addition of Greek mythology adds another layer to the storyline to make it all the more interesting.

One of the reasons I was so excited for The Darkest Promise was to finally get to focus on the only female in the lord’s group. While I love all of the characters in the series, there’s something special about a badass woman that doesn’t need any man to protect her.

That’s just what Cameo is, she’s just as strong if not stronger than the guys around her and doesn’t hesitate to run into danger along with them. That strength just makes it all the sweeter when she opens herself up to another person. But Cameo isn’t without weaknesses, she has to fight her demon Misery on a daily basis just to function.

It’s hard not to love Lazarus, the broken hero who has been through his own version of hell. Growing up Lazarus dealt with his parent’s twisted relationship that left a lasting effect on his psyche. On top of that miserable childhood, Lazarus was abducted and forced into being a harpy’s consort. Because of all of this, and what Lazarus believes to be a curse, he tries to stay separated from Cameo. Yet the pull to be close to Cameo might prove even stronger than Lazarus.

I would definitely recommend the book to anyone that is already involved in the series. For those that haven’t read a book in the series before it might be too confusing to jump into The Darkest Promise. But it’s totally worth going back and starting the series from the beginning.
