Following the news of Jon Stewart’s departure, Comedy Central has chosen Trevor Noah as the new host of The Daily Show.

Jon Stewart’s departure from The Daily Show has caused great distress to his many fans who enjoyed watching him keep American politicians and corporations in check.

But it looks like Comedy Central has found a worthy replacement in Trevor Noah, a South African comedian who has been contributing to the show since December 2014.

Trevor Noah has done a number of comedy stand-up shows both in America and South Africa, including his one-man comedy show Trevor Noah: The Racist. Check out a clip showing his comedic talent (beware of edgy language):

Noah himself tweeted about his new gig as host of The Daily Show earlier today:

In a statement, Stewart expressed his support for Noah, saying, “I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor. He’s a tremendous comic talent that we’ve loved working with.”

Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless says of the decision, “You don’t hope to find the next Jon Stewart — there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different.”

And Noah is, in Ganeless’ words, “the best person for the job.”

Update: Speaking to the Associated Press this morning, Noah explained how he’s similar to Stewart, thus how he’ll be able to carry the show forward. “One thing we both share: We are both progressives,” he said. “Obviously where you’re from may inform a lot of your decisions. But traveling the world I’ve learned that progressives, regardless of their locations, think in a global space. And although I happen to be a guy who’s not from the same place that Jon’s from, I’ve lived in America for years before I went back out on the road, and I’ve learned to love the place. I’ll bring something different because I am different, but because it’s a team, it’ll be the same as well.”

Jon Stewart will be departing The Daily Show later this year.
