Reign is one of The CW’s most anticipated fall pilots, but the historical soap might be in trouble before it’s even premiered.

Deadline reports that Stephanie SenGupta, the original creator of Reign, has left the series to focus on developing a new pilot.

The original plan was for SenGupta and co-creator Laurie McCarthy to share showrunning duties, but now McCarthy will helm the series on her own.

This decision comes following a series of rumours claiming that SenGupta and McCarthy did not see eye to eye about the project.

A recent promo for the series revealed that not only will the series feature lots of gorgeous costumes and royal intrigue, but it also has a supernatural element: one of the characters appears to have prophetic visions.

SenGupta has previously served as co-executive producer on Hawaii Five-0. Her previous credits include Ghost Whisperer, Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Reign is The CW’s first historical drama, and follows a teenage Mary Queen of Scots as she journeys to the French royal court. Adelaide Kane stars as Mary, with Toby Regbo as Prince Francis. Anna Popplewell, Caitlin Stasey, Celina Sinden and Torrance Coombs also star.

Are you worried about what this surprising showrunner departure might mean for the future of Reign?

The series will air Thursday nights at 9/8c, following The Vampire Diaries.
