Whether or not it’s the next film they make or if it even gets made at all is yet to be determined, but the Coen brothers are currently writing a movie about an opera singer.

According to The Playlist (via SlashFilm), the Coen brothers revealed something they’re working on while at the Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. The quote is from the elder Coen brother, Joel:

You always hesitate to mention these things when you are in the middle of them, because sometimes they just go in a drawer and never surface again and then people ask ‘what ever happened to that thing’ for the next 20 years. We are writing something right now where the main character is an opera singer.

The Coen brothers’ most recent and yet to be publicly released film, Inside Llewyn Davis, is also a film about a musician. As the Coen brothers are such innovative filmmakers, it’d come as a big surprise to see them make their next movie about a musician too, at least in the same sense.

Inside Llewyn Davis is about a musician in the strictest sense. It’s about his career as a musician. Therefore, it would make a lot of sense to guess that while the film they are writing now is about an opera singer, it’s not about his career as an opera singer.

It could be a story like one of their earlier film, Barton Fink. While the titular character is a screenwriter, the film is not about him being a screenwriter.

It’s also important to note that while this is the film they’re currently writing, there’s absolutely no guarantee that it ever gets made.
