Netflix is looking to bring popular UK unscripted series, The Circle to the masses.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is gearing up to adapt three new local versions of popular social media competition series, The Circle, which originally debuted on the UK’s Channel 4 in September.

For those unfamiliar with the entity, the series is described as “an innovative popularity contest and social media experiment,” which takes its cues from scenarios social media users experience in real life.

The show features multiple contestants who live in separate apartments housed within the same building. Unlike other reality series like Big Brother or The Real World that throw strangers together and require them to interact in real life, contestants on The Circle never meet throughout the course of the competition. Instead players interact via voice activation over a social media platform created for the series.

The object of the game is to come out as the platform’s most popular player, a task that might be easier than it sounds as unpopular players run the risk of getting blocked.

As with real life social media platforms, the fact that players never meet allows each competitor to choose how honest they want to be about who they truly are in their plight to win. At the end of the competition, the most popular player wins the cash grand prize.

Netflix plans to feature players from three different countries — including the United States — on their iteration of The Circle.

The online streaming giant will be working with All3Media’s Studio Lambert, who co-produced the original iteration of the series on Channel 4, to bring their rendition of the series to life.

We’ll be curious to see if a reality show competition centered around social media is able to take off on Netflix as it’s taken off across the pond in the UK!
