Doing what only J.K. Rowling can do, her new novel The Casual Vacancy will debut on USA Today’s Best-Selling books list this Thursday at the top spot.

Notably, she’ll knock E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey out of the lead, which has sat pretty at number one for 21 of the past 23 weeks.

USA Today spoke to Amazon about Rowling’s figures and the retailer noted that she is “review-proof,” implying that the mixed reviews of Casual Vacancy would never hurt sales thanks to Rowling’s success with Harry Potter. Before today she had held the lead spot on USA Today’s best-seller list 71 times.

It’ll be interesting to see how long the book can hold on to this ranking. On Monday we noted that the debut of Rick Riordan’s The Mark of Athena had already dethroned Rowling from #1 on Amazon’s best-seller list. We expect additional sales numbers to be revealed in the coming days. The book had hit one million pre-orders and two million copies are reportedly in print.

You can read our Casual Vacancy review in which we are generally positive about the book and definitely do not view it as a book for younger readers. Speaking of younger readers, parents should check out our parental guide to help decide if the book is good for their “darlings.”

Although we’d love to see one, Rowling has said in recent interviews that she doesn’t think a movie could be made out of The Casual Vacancy. “Personally, I don’t think this is a very filmable book. That is one of the things I like about it. I think it’s a very novelly novel in that a lot of what goes on happens internally. You need to understand what’s going on inside people’s heads,” she said.
