Amazon’s comic book adaptation The Boys won’t premiere until next week, but it has already been given an early renewal for a second season.

The renewal announcement came during The Boys’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Executive producer Seth Rogan also confirmed that filming is already underway on season 2, and that the cast and crew had flown directly from the set in Toronto to make an appearance at the convention.

While breaking the news about the renewal, it was also announced that Aya Cash had been added to the cast, and will play the character Stormfront.

The Boys is based on the New York Times best-selling comic of the same name, by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It centers around a world where superheroes are hugely influential, but also corrupted by their own celebrity. The titular team are a clandestine CIA squad, who regularly confront superheroes abusing their powers with gruesome results. They clash specifically with superhero team, the Seven, who induct a naive and young hero called Starlight to their ranks at the beginning of the series.

Eric Kripke developed the series for Amazon, and also serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Kripke also directed the finale episode of the first season. Joining Kripke as executive producers are Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, as well as Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Ori Marmur, and finally Ken Levin and Jason Netter. Ennis and Robertson are also credited as co-executive producers.

The cast of The Boys is a star-studded affair, Jack Quaid, Elisabeth Shue, Karl Urban, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford and Nathan Mitchell all playing significant roles. Simon Pegg is also on the cast list as a guest star.

The Boys premieres on Amazon on July 26, 2019.
