With all the talk of super-villains breaking skulls and a rollercoaster ride being built, everyone seems to have forgotten about the biggest Fandom of them all, that of the British Royal Family. Now, please bear with me here before you click away; this is relevant. The wedding of Will and Kate gained an estimated 2 billion viewers worldwide, with only about 30M of these from the UK, it’s a sure bet that at least some of you in America watched at least a bit of it.

However, I don’t give a damn about that. It was a wedding, and not a particularly exciting one. What does interest me is Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith’s Diamond Jubilee (I kid you not by the way, that’s her full title. I’ll just use HRH from now). The Diamond Jubilee is a celebration of 60 years of reign, and in the UK this will be celebrated by some boring things such as lunches and a pageant on the Thames, a bank holiday (yay)… and a gigantic concert in the centre of London.

That is what excites me, and I will explain why. Ten years ago, at the Golden Jubilee, they held a small concert in the gardens of Buck. Palace to about 15,000 people. This was an all-out show full of the biggest bands Britain (and some of those from around the world) had to offer. Think Band Aid but for aristocrats. The concert for the Diamond Jubilee is set to have a huge physical audience of 250,000 and a televised audience across the world. There is already an American television partner announced (the name of which escapes me and a brief Google search cannot find it) meaning that America will probably get the concert either in real time, or played out in full that evening.

With some outstanding performances ten years ago, here are my predictions on some of the bands/artists that we should expect to see.

– Take That – They may be on a year out, but it is fairly inevitable that the group as a whole, or at least one of them (Barlow or Williams) will perform (Rule the World or Angels respectively I wager)

– Adele – A massive selling artists whose music appeals to pretty much every demographic going? Please, no chance her not being there.

– Queen – Does it need to be explained? Ten years ago Brian May performed ‘God Save the Queen’ ON TOP of Buck. Palace. This time around they expect that commoners will be allowed on The Balcony, so let’s expect some sort of defining solo moment there this time around.

– The BBC Concert / Symphony Orchestra – These concerts are all about big, career defining songs, and one of these Orchestras will provide support to the big bands, and links between songs.

– Rod Stewart / Phil Collins / Eric Clapton – One, two or all three will take to the stage to belt out a classic hit. This concert will be a wet dream for all classic rock fans

– Lady Gaga – While this is less of a sure bet for me, they will want some American artists highly billed, and they don’t come any bigger than Lady Gaga. Will only perform if producers can guarantee she will be on her best behaviour though

– The Beatles / Sir. Paul McCartney – If you have not seen McCartney rock out ‘Hey Jude’ with a backing choir of the greatest singers/songwriters in the world, you have not lived. He will perform, this song will close the show, and the inevitability of it sickens me.

There will be a lot more bands, performing their own songs, covers, duets and all other manner of different things. Anything else I am a lot less confident about, but expect people ranging from Justin Beiber and One Direction through to Hugh Laurie and Elton John. We should expect a diverse mix of genres, bands, groups and artists from around the world. If you like music, you will like at least something here.

One thing though, and it’s important to highlight, if you can forget who this will be for, what your political views are on the matter, the reasons behind it or any other preconceptions you have because it is British royalty, it will be the biggest concert of the year, with some career defining performances. So, who would you like to see there?
