Hold on to your hats, shippers — Sheldon and Amy are going to take a major relationship leap in an upcoming episode of The Big Bang Theory.
In what may be the biggest “bang” in series history, EW reports that the eternally sexless couple will finally take things to the next level. Yes, it’s true: Amy and Sheldon will engage in coitus.
The monumental event was recently filmed before a live studio audience, and will air on The Big Bang Theory episode on Dec. 17. Executive producer Steve Molaro jumped ahead of the inevitable spoiler-train to deliver the news in a statement.
“After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship,” Molaro says. “And we’re so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes.”
The news may come to something of a surprise to fans of The Big Bang Theory, as Sheldon and Amy are still dealing with the fallout of their unpleasant breakup. (Which Sheldon, of course, has refused to accept.) But this Thursday’s episode, “The Platonic Permutation,” may begin the journey that leads “Shamy” to their mutual deflowering.
“Sheldon and Amy try hanging out as friends when they spend Thanksgiving together at the aquarium,” CBS teases. “Also, Wolowitz reluctantly agrees to volunteer at the soup kitchen with Bernadette, Raj and Emily, and Penny discovers that Leonard knows more about her than she thought.”

Hopefully, going to bed together will represent a new, healthier leaf for Sheldon and Amy — who have been about as dysfunctional as it gets in recent episodes. Amy has wanted to sleep with Sheldon for years, and has coaxed him, inch by inch, through various stages of romance.
While it goes without saying that Sheldon shouldn’t sleep with Amy if he doesn’t want to, we can only hope that his agreement indicates a new consideration for Amy’s feelings and needs. Amy has been long-suffering for long enough; it’s about time that she got what she wanted.
