The guys will attempt to change the world when The Big Bang Theory season 8, episode 5 airs tonight on CBS – but the girls will have less lofty goals. According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “The Focus Attenuation,” neither set of geeks will be entirely successful in their endeavors tonight.

“Amy and Bernadette accuse Penny of being a “buzzkill” after she gets an email from work during their Vegas weekend,” CBS says. “Meanwhile, the guys try to invent something cool, but only come up with new ways to procrastinate.”

Last week on The Big Bang Theory, Penny found herself unexpectedly resented by Raj’s girlfriend Emily; attempts to mend the relationship were mutually unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the guys decided to invest in Stuart’s comic book store, only to find that Mrs. Wolowitz had already fronted her new little munchkin all of the money.

The preview for The Big Bang Theory season 8, episode 5 focuses on the gentlemen’s goals in tonight’s episode, and suggests how they may quickly be diverted toward other, less focused pursuits.

Clips from “The Focus Attenuation” also highlight Amy and Bernadette’s liquor-fueled adventures in Las Vegas. In a truly bizarre twist of fate, it seems that Penny, of all people, is being the responsible one. Episode stills offer a bit more context to the night’s events.
