Professor Proton makes his Force-full return in the preview and stills for The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22.

Television legend Bob Newhart will return to Pasadena for the second time this season in The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22. But the preview and stills for the episode, titled “The Proton Transmogrification,” give us a hint that Professor Proton may be returning in a brand new – and rather different – capacity this week.

The preview for The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22 emphasizes the connection between Proton’s return and the upcoming Star Wars Day (May 4, for all of you non-Jedi out there.)

Judging by the preview, it looks like Bob Newhart will be playing the role of Probi-Tan Kenobi in The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22.

Meanwhile, the stills for “The Proton Transmogrification” focus almost exclusively on the geeky gang, featuring only one shot of Professor Proton, as we are accustomed to seeing him.

In addition, it looks as though part of the episode takes place at a funeral. Oh dear; could Professor Proton have become one with the Force since we have last seen him?

The official synopsis for The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22 indicates that Proton will “return to give Sheldon guidance” in this week’s episode. Is this guidance of a scientific nature, or perhaps more along the emotional spectrum?

Professor Proton helps Sheldon cope with grief, while Leonard turns a relationship milestone into a competition with Penny. Meanwhile, Amy and Bernadette make a “Star Wars Day” gift for the guys.

Given the inclusion of the G-word (grief!) we have become rather more concerned for the fate of dear Professor Proton. And if he has become one with the Force, how will Sheldon handle the loss of a second father figure?

The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 22, “The Proton Transmogrification,” will air on Thursday, May 1 at 8:00 p.m. on CBS.

How do you think Professor Proton will return to ‘The Big Bang Theory’?
