Here’s what happened on The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 20, “The Relationship Diremption.”

Stringy

At the university, Leonard is excited about some big gravity wave discovery. But Sheldon is chilly on the idea, as his devotion to string theory is incompatible with the new science. Barry Kripke chimes in to make fun of Sheldon’s devotion to the improvable field.

At the apartment, Penny tries to comfort Sheldon – she knows what it’s like to put your heart and soul into something and get nothing out of it. She compares his depression to a bad relationship (not Leonard) and tells him to break it off with string theory and walk away.

Throwing stones

Sheldon tries to get rid of the reminders of his relationship with string theory, and has Penny style his hair. Sheldon says he will pursue black holes or dark matter now. Leonard, Sheldon, and Amy are all impressed by Sheldon’s new, “too hot” look.

Sheldon is looking for a new field to explore – as long as it’s not geology, the Kardashians of science. He turns down the suggestions of the group, but only takes Penny’s idea to let a new field find him. They toast to Sheldon, and he gets drunk.

Amy puts Sheldon to bed, and the next morning, Sheldon is horrified to find…the geology textbook in his bed. But it gets worse – he has also left a string of drunken messages for Stephen Hawking, concluding with the praise of geology and The Lego Movie.

Turned tables

Raj is now only dating Emily, as Lucy was less cool with being one of two date-ees. He and Howard arrange a double-date with Bernadette and Emily. Raj makes Howard promise not to tease him, or reveal anything embarrassing.

At the restaurant, Howard admits that he thinks that Raj will blow the relationship with Emily. Unfortunately for Howard, he recognizes Emily when she walks in – and not in a good way. Emily finds Howard familiar, but can’t place him… until she can.

That awkward moment

It was four years ago on a blind date. He came to Emily’s apartment, had a digestive incident, and crawled out her bathroom window leaving behind a horrendously clogged toilet. Howard can’t get past his embarrassment, especially as the team starts to tease him.

Later on, Howard and Sheldon commiserate over their mutual embarrassments, until Barry Kripke shows up again to hammer home the humiliation.
