Even with a strategic absence from Mayim Bialik’s right hand, The Big Bang Theory continued to pull in strong ratings last night.

The Big Bang Theory continued to bring in exciting ratings for CBS with “The Decoupling Fluctuation.” The Futon Critic reports that the episode was viewed by 15.38 million people, slightly reduced from the premiere’s numbers, but still making the show Thursday’s most-viewed program.

“The Decoupling Fluctuation” continued to follow the percolating unrest in Leonard and Penny’s relationship, as Penny admitted her feelings of love-but-boredom to Amy and Bernadette. Trying to advance her relationship with Sheldon, Amy spilled the beans, prompting Sheldon to alert Leonard (with hilarious ambiguity) to her feelings. Penny’s attempt to be honest with Leonard was then derailed by the power of his irresistible puppy-dog expression.

Meanwhile, Raj’s attempts to ‘bromance’ Stuart were met with suspicion and Raisinets by Sheldon, and Howard suffered hazing from his fellow astronauts on the space station.

Last night’s episode is also the first filmed after Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler)’s car accident in which the actress suffered a serious injury to her right hand. On her blog, Bialik gave a behind-the-scenes look at accommodations made for her injury during production. From scripting to staging, Bialik writes appreciatively of the support she has received.

“Our writers have been very careful to not give my character any plotlines that involve lifting or carrying,” Bialik wrote. In addition, her “gloved and splinted” hand has been concealed “behind boxes, board games, and various containers… it often hangs out of sight under tables and desks.”

Even Amy Farrah Fowler’s famously frumpy fashion has been slightly adjusted. Since Bialik needs assistance dressing, her character’s staple stockings have been altered to thigh-highs instead of tights, which “makes [dressing] a much more dignified experience for both me and [wardrobe assistant] Jane.” Easier to spot will be the larger tops used to fit over the swelling in Bialik’s hand – fortunately, Amy should be perfectly comfortable in bulkier layers of clothing!

The Big Bang Theory continues next week with “The Higgs Boson Observation“:

Amy feels threatened when Sheldon hires a young female assistant, and the pressure of being in space takes its toll on Wolowitz.
