Howard and Sheldon both braved new relationship territory in “The Fish Guts Displacement” as The Big Bang Theory reeled in more great ratings.

The Big Bang Theory continued to float to the top of the ratings with “The Fish Guts Displacement”. The episode was watched by 17.4 million viewers last night, sweeping its time-slot once again.

Sheldon spent most of “The Fish Guts Escalation” as the very picture of the contractually-obligated-to-be dutiful boyfriend. He tended to Amy’s flu with unceasing diligence, and a healthy heap of suspicion and snark. Amy, however, was so taken by this newly attentive Sheldon (and the places where he was, for the sake of medicine, willing to touch her) that she milked the cow of her waning flu for as long as she could manage. It was kind of skeevy to watch, but at the same time, we can’t help but applaud Amy for figuring out how to get the, er… most out of what Sheldon was willing to give her.

Meanwhile, Howard proved impressively inept at keeping his mouth shut around his new in-laws. Bernadette’s hilariously taciturn parents were completely bewildered by Howard’s nervous nattering, but it was great to see Bernadette and her mom working on a similar wavelength. And in spite of their differences, Howard and Mr. Rostenkowski did manage to find a nice patch of common ground – even if it wasn’t quite what they’d expected.

The Big Bang Theory will return next week with “The Santa Simulation”:

Sheldon revisits some Christmas memories during a game of Dungeons and Dragons, while Penny, Bernadette and Amy try to find a girl for Koothrappali when he joins the girls for ladies’ night.

The Big Bang Theory airs at 8 p.m. on CBS.
