Tonight’s exciting episode of The Big Bang Theory will introduce Bob Newhart in the role of “Professor Proton” for what looks to be the first of several future appearances.

The Big Bang Theory continues its sixth season tonight with episode 22, “The Proton Resurgence.” As we have somewhat giddly reported, the episode will feature television great Bob Newhart in the titular role of Professor Proton himself. Newhart recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, sharing his feelings on the experience, and what viewers can look forward to in the future.

“I had only two things that were paramount,” Newhart said of his decision to appear on The Big Bang Theory. “Number one, my scenes had to be taped live. There’s a tendency to pre-tape a lot of stuff and put a laugh track on it and you lose something… That’s the only way I function.” Newhart’s second condition was that the role he took was not to function as a one-off gimmick. “I wanted it to be a semi-recurring role,” Newhart said, and luckily (though not surprisingly) producer Chuck Lorre “was fine with both.” Thus, the role of Professor Proton was born.

Though Newhart has no desire to return to television on a regular basis (“It’s for young people,” he admitted) he says that, per his second condition, “The Proton Resurgence” will not be the beginning and end of his character. “I’ll probably do two episodes next year,” he said, following which the fate of Professor Proton will be “strictly up to [the producers].” Newhart is not opposed to the idea, however. The Big Bang Theory is “beautifully cast, has great writing and it’s intelligent,” Newhart said. “It was very enjoyable. I loved it.”

“The Proton Resurgence” airs tonight at 8 p.m., and the official summary promises plenty of Proton-y pleasure…

Sheldon and Leonard hire Professor Proton, the host of their favorite childhood TV show, to perform. Also, Howard and Bernadette run into trouble babysitting Raj’s dog.

…And the dog. Never forget the dog.
