Three geeky couples got closer through art and science in The Big Bang Theory season 8, episode 17.

Decisions, decisions

After Leonard and Penny return from an thrilling game of mini-golf, Sheldon and Amy make a big announcement: They’re adopting a turtle together!

Mazal tov.

But trouble strikes at the pet store. Sheldon and Amy examine a prospective turtle, and fill it in on when it would live with each of them. Sheldon adds that the turtle will go with Amy if his application to join a colony on Mars is accepted.

Amy is like, “You applied to move to Mars, and you didn’t tell me???”

Snoopy

When Emily gets an call from the hospital, Raj is left alone in her apartment. Bored, he roams around and calls Howard, opening drawers and inspecting Emily’s place.

Unfortunately, one drawer gets stuck and won’t close – clear evidence that he has been snooping. An attempt to fix the drawer breaks it completely.

The conversation moves to face-time, and Raj tries desperately to fix the drawer. Emily comes home, and he confesses to snooping; she is quite angry.

Howard and Bernadette listen in with fascination.

Mars attacks

Sheldon and Amy return home without the turtle, which bit Sheldon. Amy also hurt, albeit about the fact that Sheldon didn’t ask her before applying to leave the planet forever.

Sheldon insists it’s just an application and tries to cheer Amy up. He shows Amy the video he made for the application of why he wants to go to Mars. It includes bragging about Sheldon’s intelligence, hygiene, and humor, and an impassioned desire to further humanity’s pursuit of knowledge.

Amy is not impressed.

The art of love

Leonard gives Penny a gift from “the dirty store” which involves paint, canvas, and sexy times.

Just like Michelangelo.

Alas, the final product is, dare we say, rather static, and they resolve to try again for a more dynamic result.

After Leonard gets paint in his eye, he and Penny manage to come up with a much more interesting mural. They decide to give the final result to Sheldon and pretend it was painted by William Shatner.

Proposal

Amy decides to leave, upset about what the abandoned turtle signifies. Sheldon follows her out of the apartment, and offers to withdraw his application to become a Martian. Amy says that she wants them to be planning their future together – and yes, on the same planet.

But Sheldon proposes that that planet doesn’t have to be Earth. “If I’m going to a barren, lifeless environment where the chances of survival are slim to none,” he says. “I want you there with me.”

Sheldon and Amy hug, and get started on Amy’s Mars application.

Emily and Raj have make-up sex. She asks if he looked in her closet, and when he promises he didn’t, tells him not to worry about what’s inside.

Emily rolls over, grinning like a cat. Suffice to say, Raj has a hard time sleeping.
