With The Dark Knight Rises hitting theaters this Friday, a Batmobile documentary has recently been released with director Christopher Nolan and many other Batman directors and crew discussing the origins and evolution of the massively iconic Batmobile.

In the mid 1960s, George Barris purchased the Lincoln Futura for $1 from Ford Motor Company. In August 1965, a Batman TV show was in the works and the producers approached Barris to convert the Futura into a wild new car for their new TV show. During October of 1965, the Batmobile was born and TV and film history surrounding custom vehicles was never the same. This documentary covers over 40 years of Batmobile transformations – including Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler, which revolutionized the public perception of the Batmobile.

Hypable Senior Editor John Thrasher was at Comic-Con this past weekend and got some great shots of all the different Batmobiles that have existed through the years.
