The Batman is adding a few more vital roles to the movie! Andy Serkis is rumored to be in talks to play Alfred, while Colin Farrell is being tapped to play The Penguin.

Gear up, Batman fans, because Matt Reeves is clearly putting together something special for his 2021 The Batman movie.

So far, the solo Batman flick has Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon (which means we’ll be getting a woman of color for Batgirl, whenever that movie drops!) and Paul Dano as The Riddler.

If that wasn’t enough, today The Batman continued to stun and surprise us with its casting choices, with not one, but two pieces of casting news.

First, The Wrap broke the news that Andy Serkis, best known for playing all the best motion capture characters in the last decade or so, is in talks to play Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s famous butler and most trusted confidante.

Not to be outscooped, Deadline then broke the news that Colin Farrell, the man we all wished had stayed Grindelwald instead of being replaced, was also in talks to play Batman villain The Penguin.

Alfred is a role nearly as iconic as the Dark Knight himself, and it wouldn’t truly be a Batman movie without him. He’s been played by a variety of talented actors like William Austin, Michael Gough, Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons, with Ralph Fiennes voicing Alfred in two animated films.

The Penguin’s last big screen appearance was in Tim Burton’s 1992 Batman Returns, where he was played by Danny DeVito. While The Penguin is often depicted as being short, squat, scary-looking, and hook nosed, it would seem that isn’t the direction Reeves is going with his version. No amount of prosthetics is going to hide how handsome Colin Farrell truly is.

Note that both of these bits of casting news come with the caveat of still being in negotiations, which means that they — like the Jonah Hill as Penguin casting — could still go south if the money isn’t right.

However, they could also go like the Jeffrey Wright casting and be completely right. We’ll have to wait and see whether or not director Matt Reeves posts a gif of one or both the actors in the near future, as he’s done with all the other confirmed casting choices.
