If you’re a fan of Penny Dreadful then you’re definitely going to want to check out The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful.

As explained by the official website, “Penny Dreadful is a powerfully written saga filled with dark mystery and suspense. It lives in a demimonde — a half world between reality and the supernatural — where personal demons from the past can be stronger than vampires, evil spirits and immortal beasts. Some of literature’s most terrifying figures, including Dr. Frankenstein and his Creature, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of the city. They are joined by a core of original characters in a new narrative filled with alienation and dread.

During this era of tremendous technological and scientific experimentation, characters are driven by fatal curiosity. Some are consumed by world exploration, others by testing the boundaries of life. Their dark endeavors shed terrifying light on the unknown. In a time rife with sin and psychological exploration, love and passion are tainted by deeper, darker mysteries. Suffering from a need for love, characters give into erotic temptation, resulting in horrific, otherworldly consequences.”

Book Review

When you think about book tie ins, and “making of” ones in particular, you generally get a moderately pretty, glossy book with pages that have stills and information about the characters and not much else. But The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful is so much more than that. Starting with the cover, it’s more than just the same glossy material that the pages are made of – it’s thick and embossed and filled with so much detail that we kind of want to make a poster out of it.

This is a heavy book, filled with information and facts that will entertain you for hours if you’re a fan of Penny Dreadful – and as a friend of ours attested, even if you’re not a fan you’ll still love it!

Yes, it is filled with stills and information about stuff going on behind-the-scenes, but it’s the delivery of those stills and information that make you actually want to keep reading all of it. You might find yourself flipping through it at the store just wanting to see what’s inside but then you’ll catch a beautiful page of the vampire, wanting to read more about it. You’ll catch drawings and pictures of the set and how they made certain things like Frankenstein’s laboratory or Dorian Gray’s house.

And not only is the book visually stunning but it’s filled with truly interesting information about how the show was made, who these characters are at their core, and how the actors who play them got into it. There’s even a page all about Proteus, who left us far too soon.

There’s not much else that can be said about The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful, but if you’re a fan of the show and you like books then this is a must-have.
