The more we learn about the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds, the crazier — and more awesome — it sounds.

Since our last round-up of the Elseworlds news, we’ve learned a lot about what exactly is going on in the big Arrowverse crossover this year. It sounds like it’s going to be nuts.

And we can’t wait.

So, what do we know?

The plot

Per EW, John Deegan, a doctor at Arkham Asylum played by Jeremy Davies, rewrites reality. This new reality sees Oliver and Barry swapping lives — the Oliver of the new world looks like Barry and the Barry of the new world looks like Oliver.

Oh, and Oliver has Barry’s speed while Barry has Oliver’s fighting abilities. Oliver and Barry are also the only ones who know things are not as they should be.

“You’re not going to see me playing Oliver Queen’s mannerisms, or Stephen [Amell] playing Barry’s mannerisms,” Grant Gustin says. “It’s more being aware that for some reason we’ve switched lives and destinies. It’s more the fun of the situational comedy that we keep finding ourselves in, and less us having a complete role reversal,”

He adds, “We get to see Stephen do some of the more goofy speed stuff I have to do on a regular basis, and I get some actual combat as Green Arrow. So, we just see different colors for each of us.”

“Having superpowers is crazy! Wearing the Flash suit is crazy!” Amell says. “The idea is that in order to be the best version of Barry Allen, which I have to be because we face a threat, there are elements of his personality I have to embrace, and there are elements of my personality that he has to embrace.”

Meanwhile, Kara is pulled in because she can see Oliver and Barry for who they are supposed to be. “She’s trying to help them navigate what they’re going through and support them and kind of battle their way back to being who they’re supposed to be,” Supergirl EP Robert Rovner explains.

Of the absence of the Legends this year, Marc Guggenheim says, ” The hard thing about crossing over with Legends is, because that’s an ensemble show, you’re crossing over with the entire cast. That said, there is a Legends cameo in hour 3.”

How does Batwoman (and Batman) fit into all of this?

Na na na na Batwoman

When Elseworlds happens, Batman has been gone from Gotham for three years, Caroline Dries, executive producer the potential Batwoman series, tells EW. “[I]f you have the law and order, protector, and hope gone, what happens as a result?”

“Some people are thriving in his absence because now they can start to do their own thing without the oversight. A lot of other people are suffering and they’re losing hope, and the city itself and infrastructure is falling apart. So it’s not a happy place. Our guys walk into a grimy, scary Gotham,” Dries previews.

“It’s a dead city,” Guggenheim adds. “The way I sort of described it to Stephen is, it’s there but for the grace of God goes Star City. It’s the worst case scenario. The reason no one talks about Gotham is the city might as well be dead. It’s practically a ghost town.”

And when our heroes head to Gotham? Well, “Oliver is like, ‘He’s not real! They’ve made him up! It’s a hoax just to scare the citizens,'” Gustin previews. Meanwhile, “Barry is flabbergasted by that and all he wants to do in Gotham is meet Batman. It’s a pretty funny scene,” says Gustin.

Adds Amell, “Oliver is not enthused about the idea that there might be some other vigilante out there.”

As for how Batwoman will appear in the crossover, Guggenheim jokes, “She’s a lot like Batman in the sense that she’s kind of a dick.” He adds “She will interact with our heroes both as Batwoman and as Kate Kane, so you’ll see both sides of that character and that performance.”

“She is more fun because she’s a billionaire, she has ladies that love her. I think, for the most part crossover-wise, she’s swaggy,” teases Ruby Rose. “She always knew who she was, but she’s really coming into knowing who she is in the crossover, and with Batwoman as well. It’s not the first time she’s put on the suit.”

Moreover, Kate will not be happy to see our heroes in her city. “Kate does not want to deal with this. She has a whole other agenda, a whole other life that she’s trying to sort out right now, and these frigging superheroes come in and they’re a mess, and they need her help,” Rose explains.

It’s a bird, it’s plane, it’s Superman

We’ll also be seeing Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the crossover. As for how he fits into the story, Rovner explains that it relates to the mid-season finale of Supergirl: “Kara is coming out of the midseason finale at a crossroads, and the journey that she’s on is kind of helped by Clark, who is returning from Argo kind of on his own journey.”

We’ll also be seeing a black Superman suit… but Tyler Hoechlin will also don the traditional red and blue suit.

We also have a photo of Clark and Lois Lane in what appears to be the Fortress of Solitude:

Other appearances

The crossover will introduce The Monitor, played by LaMonica Garrett. The Monitor, aka Mar-Novu, is described as “an extraterrestrial being of infinite power.”

“LaMonica was ridiculous, like seeing him in his suit, he’s just a monster,” Gustin tells EW. “He’s like an absolute unit. He doesn’t have to do a lot with his performance. He’s so intimidating with just these subtleties, so that’s dope.”

In the DC Comics, the Monitor is assigned to look after the multiverse. His dark counterpart, the Anti-Monitor, at the center of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which, curiously, is a storyline being hinted at in The Flash this season.

John Wesley Shipp will also be reprising his role as Barry Allen from the 1990s The Flash series. A photo shows him suited up in the classic suit as he stands alongside Supergirl, Green Arrow and The Flash. Amell tweeted his excitement at sharing the screen with Shipp.

Amell’s real-life wife, Cassandra Jean Amell, will also play Nora Fries, the wife of Victor Fries (who was name-dropped in The Flash). We don’t know how she will fit into the story yet.
