FX’s The Americans ups the ante with more attacks in Washington, DC in its eighth episode “Mutually Assured Destruction,” as seen in the synopsis and clip.

The Americans revealed more of Philip’s (Matthew Rhys) background in last week’s episode “Duty and Honor” by having his mission intersect with that of his former flame Irina (Marine Squerciati). Irina dropped a bomb on Philip by revealing that they have a son together back in Poland and asking him to quit being a spy for her. Fortunately for Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and their kids, Philip refuses and goes home. In “Mutually Assured Destruction” Elizabeth probes for more information after what happened with Irina in New York, going to Claudia (Margo Martindale) for advice. Claudia seems to be a pessimist on the likelihood of spy marriages resulting in love saying, “If you start to think of your marriage as real it doesn’t work. The men don’t think of it that way.”

The preview clip also reveals that Stan (Noah Emmerich) and Nina (Annet Mahendru) will continue their affair. What do you think about this?

According to the synopsis, Philip and Elizabeth will be tasked with stopping an assassin who is intent on killing American scientists. However, Stan and the FBI will also be on the trail of this killer. Do you think the assassin is a rogue Soviet spy or someone else?

The Americans airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
