FX’s The Americans continues its mix of intrigue and real life events in its fourth episode “In Control,” featuring the attempted assassination on President Reagan as seen by the new promo, stills, and synopsis.

Thus far on The Americans, the U.S. government has interacted with the KGB spies Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) Jennings through their FBI neighbor Stan (Noah Emmerich) and their government informants at other federal agencies. During “In Control,” the events surrounding Reagan’s assassination attempt will directly affect the Jennings. Although in the past episode the Jennings were entrusted with planting listening devices in the Secretary of Defense’s private study, they have not killed or maimed an American government official, at least that viewers of The Americans have seen.

The synopsis hints at the pressure that this historic event will place on the Jennings and on Stan. “An assassination attempt on President Reagan causes chaos in both the FBI and KGB. Stan puts pressure on his new spy to find out if the Soviets were responsible.”

As seen in the preview video, Philip and Elizabeth are unsure of whether or not the KGB and the Soviet government ordered the assassination attempt. At the time of the attack, there was speculation of Soviet involvement. However, this proved to be false. In actuality, the shooter was John Hinckley Jr., a mentally ill man who was obsessed with the actress Jodie Foster.
