So much for that new Oscar category — for now. The Academy has announced that the previously announced Popular Film Oscar category “merits further study” and will not be added to the 2019 slate.

The “Outstanding Popular Film” category was announced last month and was billed as “a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film.” Today the Academy admitted it’s not ready for prime time.

According to a press release, the Academy “recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released. The Board of Governors continues to be actively engaged in discussions, and will examine and seek additional input regarding this category.”

“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

The internet was quick to criticize the new category, and many worried that it would cause Black Panther to be pushed out of the Best Oscar category.

Last month’s announcement also included news that the telecast would be shortened to three hours by not televising select categories.

The next Oscars will take place Sunday, February 24, 2019.
